THE BEGINNING OF BUENA PARK
Except for a few wineries, the creamery built in 1889 was the first industry in Orange County. Orange County became a separate county from Los Angeles County that year. The creamery that helped develop many dairy farms was a great help in the growth of the town itself. The Guinn history of 1902 points out this fact because of the large cash payment for milk and labor in that early frontier area. Sugar beets became an important product on farms in the area. One of the two sugar beet ramps on the Southern Pacific Railroad shows through the trees on the left.
An amusing sight on the street was a replica of the can on a wagon, pulled by a Jersey cow, making local deliveries. It was also used for advertising at State fairs. Later pictures showed the word CREAM had been changed to MILK. This was forced by the federal government because it actually was condensed milk. The creamery was originally built by a group from Nova Scotia. It was soon sold to a local group, but closed as a creamery in 1907. |
